Paleoenvironmental reconstruction, paleoecology and sequence stratigraphy of some Nummulites buildups in Egypt

Abstract The present study deals with microfacies analysis, paleoecology and sequence stratigraphy of the Lower–Middle Eocene rocks in central Nile Valley west-central Sinai. Four rock units were marked (Minia, Darat, Samalut Maghagha formations). Eight facies belts interpreted including lagoon, back bank, main fore bank open marine outer deposited on a gently dipping platform ramp. This ramp might be further divided to three faunal associations depending depth water associated fauna. major depositional sequences (DS1–DS4), reflecting third-order cycles separated by two prominent boundaries (SB1 SB2) marked. record these reflects changes eustatic sea level plus regional tectonism area. Every includes associations, which constitute lowstand and/or transgressive highstand systems tracts. Based elements salinity, temperature, nutrients, substrate, hydrodynamic behavior discussed. fine-grain size deposits, loss good connectedness occluding Nummulite tests other minerals could give rise low reservoir potential. sedimentation was affected tectonic activity Syrian orogeny. Moreover, both external internal mechanisms have controlled carbonate sedimentation, basin construction bounding surfaces.
